Ashwin’s IPL journey began in 2009 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and fittingly, he bid farewell to the tournament in 2025 while donning the same iconic yellow jersey. However, this season proved to be a quiet one for the veteran spinner, and speculations around his relationship with the franchise had been in the headlines. Reports also suggested that CSK was considering releasing him ahead of the next season.
Over a glorious 16-year-long IPL career, Ashwin played 220 matches, taking 187 wickets with his crafty spin bowling. He represented multiple franchises including CSK, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Rising Pune Supergiants, and even led Punjab Kings as captain. Known for his sharp cricketing brain and strategic gameplay, Ashwin has been one of the most dependable spinners in the league’s history.
Expressing gratitude, Ashwin thanked the BCCI, IPL management, and fans for their unwavering support throughout his career. He described the decision as a “new beginning” while reflecting on his IPL journey.
With his IPL retirement, one of the most tactical and influential chapters in league history has come to an end. While Ashwin’s absence will surely be felt on Indian pitches, fans can still look forward to watching him in other cricket leagues across the globe.
