Australia:   Researchers at Flinders University say they may have uncovered what causes the rare blood-clotting disorder linked to some adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccines — a finding that could help make future vaccines safer. The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that in very rare cases the immune system may confuse a normal blood protein called platelet factor 4 (PF4) with a similar protein linked to the adenovirus used in certain vaccines. That mistaken immune response can produce antibodies that activate platelets and lead to dangerous blood clots. The condition, known as vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT), was reported in a small number of people during the worldwide rollout of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and a few other adenovirus-based shots. Guangdong, China:   In a significant breakthrough for global biodiversity research, scientists have identified a new species of spiny frog, named   Quasipaa yunkaiensis , in the Yunkaishan National Nature Reserve of southern China. The discovery, published in the reputed journal Asian Herpetological Research, sheds fresh light on the complex taxonomy of the Quasipaa genus, known for its unique spiny features. The newly discovered amphibian stands out from its relatives due to its unusually large body size and smooth dorsal skin—traits that sharply contrast with the typical spiny appearance seen in other Quasipaa species. Adult males of the species can grow up to 113.8 mm in length, making it one of the larger members of the genus. Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve, England: A rare species of fungus, known as Microglossum cyanobasis , has been discovered in the UK for the first time at Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve . The find was made by fungi enthusiast Liz Frost , who spotted the tiny, tongue-shaped organism while exploring the ancient woodland landscape. The fungus, first identified in Spain nearly two decades ago, is known for its distinctive bluish-green base and delicate structure. Initially, six fruiting bodies were observed, with more discovered the following day.
