Northeast on High Alert: IMD Warns of Intense Rains and Storms in Assam, Meghalaya
Guwahati/Shillong, June 18 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next 48 hours. The intensified monsoon currents are expected to bring widespread disruption across several districts.
According to the IMD's latest bulletin, districts in lower
and central Assam such as Kamrup, Darrang, Sonitpur, and Barpeta are likely to
receive rainfall exceeding 204 mm in 24 hours — a category marked as “extremely
heavy”. Meghalaya’s Garo Hills and areas surrounding Shillong are also set to
experience torrential rain and stormy weather.
Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone and
landslide-prone areas to take precautionary measures. "Waterlogging, flash
floods, and landslides are likely to affect normal life, disrupt traffic, and
damage property, especially in vulnerable zones," the IMD warned. Disaster
response teams have been alerted, and district administrations have been asked
to remain on standby.
Schools in several affected areas have been advised to
remain closed, and local authorities are monitoring river levels closely. The
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) and Meghalaya State Disaster
Management Authority (MSDMA) have issued helpline numbers and safety advisories
to the public.
The IMD has also advised fishermen and travelers to avoid
venturing into hilly or low-lying areas during this period. With the monsoon in
full swing, residents are urged to stay informed through official updates and
remain cautious.
