Northeast on High Alert: IMD Warns of Intense Rains and Storms in Assam, Meghalaya Guwahati / Shillong , June 18 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall , thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next 48 hours. The intensified monsoon currents are expected to bring widespread disruption across several districts. According to the IMD's latest bulletin, districts in lower and central Assam such as Kamrup, Darrang, Sonitpur, and Barpeta are likely to receive rainfall exceeding 204 mm in 24 hours — a category marked as “extremely heavy”. Meghalaya’s Garo Hills and areas surrounding Shillong are also set to experience torrential rain and stormy weather.
