New Delhi – The recent discovery of naturally mummified cheetah remains in the caves of northern Saudi Arabia has emerged as a stark reminder of the species' historical decline and the challenges facing modern conservation efforts, particularly India's ambitious cheetah reintroduction program . The remains, some dating back over 1,800 years, were preserved by the region's arid conditions, offering a rare glimpse into the cheetah's past. Genetic analysis, conducted by researchers, reveals connections to contemporary populations in Asia and northwest Africa, underscoring that the cheetah's disappearance from much of its former range was largely driven by human activities such as habitat destruction, unregulated hunting, and dwindling prey populations.
