United Nations : The United Nations is considering a major institutional reform to strengthen its global work on gender equality and reproductive health, with a proposed merger of UN Women and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said on Thursday. Addressing an informal plenary meeting of the General Assembly under the UN80 Initiative in New York, Mohammed said the move aims to create a unified platform combining gender equality expertise with sexual and reproductive health services to “scale impact” for women, girls and youth worldwide. She noted that while progress has been made in advancing women’s rights — with 99 legal reforms enacted globally between 2019 and 2024 — challenges remain uneven across targets under Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 5 on gender equality. Citing the 2025 Gender Snapshot, Mohammed warned that nearly 351 million women and girls could still be living in poverty by 2030 if current trends continue. ...

Guangdong, China:   In a significant breakthrough for global biodiversity research, scientists have identified a new species of spiny frog, named   Quasipaa yunkaiensis , in the Yunkaishan National Nature Reserve of southern China. The discovery, published in the reputed journal Asian Herpetological Research, sheds fresh light on the complex taxonomy of the Quasipaa genus, known for its unique spiny features. The newly discovered amphibian stands out from its relatives due to its unusually large body size and smooth dorsal skin—traits that sharply contrast with the typical spiny appearance seen in other Quasipaa species. Adult males of the species can grow up to 113.8 mm in length, making it one of the larger members of the genus. Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve, England: A rare species of fungus, known as Microglossum cyanobasis , has been discovered in the UK for the first time at Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve . The find was made by fungi enthusiast Liz Frost , who spotted the tiny, tongue-shaped organism while exploring the ancient woodland landscape. The fungus, first identified in Spain nearly two decades ago, is known for its distinctive bluish-green base and delicate structure. Initially, six fruiting bodies were observed, with more discovered the following day.
