Chanho/Ranchi: A 35-year-old migrant labourer from Jharkhand’s Chanho area was allegedly murdered with a sharp-edged tool at a brick kiln in Bihar’s Bhojpur district. Police have arrested the accused, who was reportedly the victim’s co-worker and fellow villager. The deceased, identified as Shivnath Munda , was a resident of Barhe village under Chanho police station limits. According to officials, the accused Ranjit Lohra , also from Barhe village, worked alongside Shivnath at the same brick kiln. Police said Shivnath and Ranjit had travelled in January 2025 with several others from their village to work at a brick kiln located in Tetardih village under Hasan Bazar police station area of Bhojpur district. On the night of April 21 , an argument reportedly broke out between the two men while they were having food and drinks at the kiln premises. Ranchi: Ranchi police have seized a pickup vehicle allegedly carrying cattle heads and skeletal remains in the Pithoria police station area of Jharkhand’s capital, detaining one person for questioning in connection with the case. The vehicle was intercepted in Piru Tola after officers received specific intelligence that animal remains were being transported to another location for unlawful disposal or sale. Acting swiftly on the information, a police team launched a targeted operation, cordoned off the locality and stopped the suspected vehicle during a search drive.  Officials said the remains were recovered during an inspection, following which the vehicle was impounded and taken to the police station for further examination. The incident has triggered concern among local residents and renewed scrutiny over the illegal transport and disposal of animal waste in peri-urban areas. Australia:   Researchers at Flinders University say they may have uncovered what causes the rare blood-clotting disorder linked to some adenovirus-based COVID-19 vaccines — a finding that could help make future vaccines safer. The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that in very rare cases the immune system may confuse a normal blood protein called platelet factor 4 (PF4) with a similar protein linked to the adenovirus used in certain vaccines. That mistaken immune response can produce antibodies that activate platelets and lead to dangerous blood clots. The condition, known as vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT), was reported in a small number of people during the worldwide rollout of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and a few other adenovirus-based shots. United Nations : The United Nations is considering a major institutional reform to strengthen its global work on gender equality and reproductive health, with a proposed merger of UN Women and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said on Thursday. Addressing an informal plenary meeting of the General Assembly under the UN80 Initiative in New York, Mohammed said the move aims to create a unified platform combining gender equality expertise with sexual and reproductive health services to “scale impact” for women, girls and youth worldwide. She noted that while progress has been made in advancing women’s rights — with 99 legal reforms enacted globally between 2019 and 2024 — challenges remain uneven across targets under Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 5 on gender equality. Guangdong, China:   In a significant breakthrough for global biodiversity research, scientists have identified a new species of spiny frog, named   Quasipaa yunkaiensis , in the Yunkaishan National Nature Reserve of southern China. The discovery, published in the reputed journal Asian Herpetological Research, sheds fresh light on the complex taxonomy of the Quasipaa genus, known for its unique spiny features. The newly discovered amphibian stands out from its relatives due to its unusually large body size and smooth dorsal skin—traits that sharply contrast with the typical spiny appearance seen in other Quasipaa species. Adult males of the species can grow up to 113.8 mm in length, making it one of the larger members of the genus.
